Just when I needed it, when I was feeling that preparing healthy food and eating right was just not enjoyable, I stumbled upon French Women Don’t Get Fat.

I truly want to take great pleasure in creating a healthy life for my family. I do not want it to be a burden. Yes, sometimes I will not take pleasure in it, and other times, I will make poor choices, but I see the journey helping me discern the good from the bad. I am learning to listen to what my body really wants to eat in order to thrive, eating less of what is just plain bad for it, and more of the whole, God given, nourishing food.  It has been a great blessing to me as I have taken the time to slow down and savour my food, putting my fork down between bites, eating at the table, and listening to my stomach.

I’ve discovered that I need this slowing down to truly hear what my body is saying, and to stay in balance. When I rush through my day, and forget to take this time, usually my food choices run on the poor side.

I also love the idea of indulging in things that I truly love, and learning to discern the real indulgences, instead of the imitation fillers. Quality is becoming more and more important to me.

I encourge anyone to slow down as they eat. Sit down. Put your fork down. Eat with your family, and talk. Listen to your body as you eat. It is amazing what it tells you.

Who? Just who is resisting? Me! Oh my, things run deep. But- and here is good news- my flash back into not eating as well has really felt terrible this time. I can tell such a huge difference in myself. Chocolate gives me anxiety, prickly anxiety I can actually feel in my arms. Sugar depressess me, makes my mind sluggish. Improperly prepared grains make me bloat something awful (and I think the sugar helps me bloat some more). I honestly feel blessed to be seeing the reality of my poor food choices.

I realize the relasp has happened mostly due to doing too much at one time. Not being able to have dairy has really thrown a wrench into things. That is a huge change for me, something I am feeling very proud of myself for sticking to. I love dairy, and this is a hard change for me. New habbits take time, and I need to allow my body to get used to the changes I’m making. I think I would be a crazy lady if I tried starving off all the bad yeast in my body all at once. I don’t know if it works very well trying to do it slowly, but that is what I am going to do for now.

I have always known that planning is very important when eating healthy, especially for a growing family. I find that when I do not plan ahead and think about our food choices, I end up making poor choices. I need to plan healthy and simple snacks that will satisfy my picky crew, and this is a huge challenge for me. I have pretty much got a handle on breakfasts and dinners, but lunch also can be a problem. Lunch is usually a meal I want to be easy to prepare, or something my kids can do on their own. These quick meals have been difficult for me lately.  My boys usually will eat cheese with something for lunch, I usually have leftovers (but my husband often takes those with him for his lunch). Right now I am not eating dairy because my breastfed daughter reacts to it with severe reflux, so I just don’t quite know what to do.

This weekend and next week are going to be intensely busy, and food shopping is in the works, and I just want to be prepared with good nourishing food. I have not been proud of my food choices this week… it started well with a few days of The Maker’s Diet, but I was not getting enough calories, and began snacking (on healthy foods), and somewhere lost my momentum.

I read the book French Women Don’t Get Fat this week, and I really, really enjoyed it. Improve some of her nutritional advice, and use her “French” way of thinking about food, and I think we have a great set up.

I hope everyone is doing well, and less busy than I am right now!

I thought I would share with you why I titled my blog Liahona. The Liahona is a name for a special compass in my religion. Not just any compass, but one that only works if you are following the right path. I felt that this was a good symbol to use in my “nourishing” journey. As I make right choices for my family’s health, we will be blessed and see healing progress. If I do not make right choices, our progression will stop. I hope it helps me stay focused on doing what I know is right and good, and keep me from getting distracted by the not so good.

I ordered Dr. Ron’s 5 essential suppliments last week, and started taking them last Saturday. I will be skipping Sundays (resting on the Sabbath), but taking them every other day. These suppliments consists of High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil, X Factor Butter Oil, Doc’s Friendly Flora, Organ Delight, and a pure Vitamin E. I also take a tsp. of Bragg’s Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. It is a lot, but considering that all but one is basically a whole food formula, that’s not too bad.

Now, results so far: Shockingly the thrush on my nipples is finally beginning to go away. I never expected this. I thought for sure it would take a least a month of taking these, and consistently eating well (mostly avoiding my sugar addiction) in order to see any improvement. I had been topically using grapefruit seed extract a few times a day, and I haven’t needed to for two days. I am convinced that restoring our bodies beneficial flora is so important, and probably not as hard to do as we think.

On another note. Although I have been very careful to prepare pretty healthy food for my family, yesterday we went out for pizza, and then I bought some Easter candy (on sale) for the kids. My husband is out of town, and I tend to get a little lax on things when he is gone. I need to have a plan in hand for when I want to “not cook”.

I have always been into being healthy, not always living by what I know, but at least on a continuous improvement track. I discovered the book Nourishing Traditions many, many years ago at my local library, and knew it was filled with wonderful wisdom, although it has taken a long and consistent effort to actually begin using the lessons contained within it.
Fast forward to this year. My under one daughter (number 4 child) has been my “most difficult” baby yet. I finally realize that she is dealing with reflux issues, due to pasteurized milk that I’m drinking, and most likely due to lack of good bacteria in her GI track as well. Then we get thrush, and it does not respond to normal thrush protocol. I realize it is high time we get serious about our food choices.
We face a number of difficulties. The biggest is that raw milk is illegal to sell in my state. The next biggest is my husband isn’t always on board with me. Then there is trying to shop with four children (and this is not a light issue), and monetary constraints.
With all of this, I am determined to eat well, and get healthy. I have plunked down my money for good quality food supplements, and I am planning on using the Maker’s Diet as a starting point. Hat’s off to us!
